This is a description of 2007/2008 Science Night.
This year will be even better! Please check back for future updates.
I can make a difference by...
We are challenging our students and classrooms to
showcase projects that can or have made a difference in their lives,
communities or even in their own homes. This could be as
simple as demonstrating the difference in energy use for household light
bulbs, or learning about new emergency room technologies that might save
lives! Projects can be submitted as pamphlets, posters, 3-D or even
the old fashioned way - using a Science Fair Project Board
(Available at Staples or Michaels). The idea is to keep it fun and
informative!
Please note that our 5th graders, in preparation for
required 6th grade science fair project, may have specific classroom
guidelines to follow that will be provided by their teachers.
Some of our teachers have elected to submit "classroom projects" a list of
those classrooms is at the bottom of this page.
In addition, we will have a fun filled evening with many
activities including:
- An electric car
demonstration by Hillside Ride of Breton Bay
-
Come take a ride in an electric car! We will have
shuttles in the parking lot, and a demonstration area to take a joy ride!
For more information about the electric cars please

Hillside Ride Web Site
- A hands on
science demonstration presented by Mad Science of

- Our very own version of
Are you Smarter than a 5th Grader!
A Science Trivia Game Show, starring our very own
Leonardtown Elementary students and teachers. Come out and show your
stuff!
And don't forget - 5th grade science is tough!
Sign up for the game show will be the night of the
event. There will be 6 games, and a slot for one student from each
grade level (k-5) to compete in each game. The audience also gets a
chance to play!
This year, in addition to a ton of fun and laughs, we
will also be demonstrating some of the technologies that are currently
available in our school.
This production is a fun-raiser,
and partially sponsored by some of our local businesses. If your
company or family would like to contribute, please
follow this link for a
printable information sheet or
Contact Laurie - by phone (301-475-7060).
Dinner is served! We
will be providing an assortment of sandwich wraps freshly made by The
County Seat in Leonardtown. For a flat $5.00 fee you will get a
delicious wrap, cookie and drink.
Mrs. Duke Wilson is busy using her creativity and
preparing another beautiful basket of goodies to be raffled off as another
fund raiser for the technology committee.
Ms. Thompson, 3rd grade and a group of teachers will be
on hand to answer questions about our upcoming Maryland School Assessment
test. (MSAs).

Science Fair Rules
This is not an official science fair. We don't have a lot of
rules. As much as possible, we try to follow the theme - but if you
have an awesome project, that doesn't quite fit the theme, please feel
free to submit it! The idea is to keep the kids excited about
science and excited about creating projects.
Basic Rules:
Project - with all necessary materials that include student name,
teacher and grade level.
In the past, we have had a bit of trouble with exploding projects.
In fact, one year is only known as "The Year of the Exploding Volcano".
For this reason, if you child has a potentially messy project, please come
prepared with a disaster kit that includes paper towels and a cleaning
product.
If the project is especially "messy", or if it requires electricity
please have an adult on hand at all times. Additionally, if you need
electricity please let me know ahead of time so I can place you by an
outlet. I can be reached at
la.stone@verizon.net
The Forrest Technology Center has very graciously offered us the space
for our fair - but it's our responsibility to leave the room clean.
Thank you again for your participation and we look forward to a fun
filled - informative evening!
